Is a Hong Kong and Japan holiday a good combination?
Yes. Hong Kong is a natural first stop on the way to Japan, with Disneyland, a big-city skyline and a food scene that contrasts with Kyoto's temples and Tokyo's neighbourhoods. The flight between them is only around four hours, so you lose very little time moving on.
How long is the flight from Hong Kong to Japan?
Flights from Hong Kong to Osaka Kansai, the closest major airport to Kyoto, take around four hours. From Kansai Airport, the Haruka express train reaches Kyoto in roughly 75 minutes.
Is it worth going to Hong Kong Disneyland?
For families and Disney fans, yes. It is one of the smaller Disney parks, which makes it easy to enjoy in a day, and it is home to World of Frozen, a full land themed on the film. Queues are often shorter than at the Tokyo parks.
Is 1 day enough for Hong Kong Disneyland?
One full day is usually enough to see the main lands, shows and parades, especially if you arrive at opening and use the official app for wait times. A second day is only needed if you want to repeat favourite rides at a slower pace.
Which is better, Hong Kong Disneyland or Tokyo Disneyland?
Tokyo Disney Resort is larger, with two separate parks, and needs at least two days. Hong Kong Disneyland is smaller and easier to cover in one day. If you would like both, our consultants can add a Tokyo Disneyland day while you are in Tokyo.
What is the best time for a Hong Kong and Japan holiday?
October and November are often ideal, with drier, cooler weather in Hong Kong and autumn colours in Kyoto and Tokyo. Late March and early April bring cherry blossom in Japan but are busy. Summer is hot and humid in both, with typhoons possible from around July to September.
Can you take large suitcases on the bullet train?
Yes, but plan ahead. On the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Tokyo, bags with total dimensions over 160 cm need an oversized-baggage seat reserved in advance. Many travellers send large cases ahead with a luggage forwarding service, which hotels can arrange.
Do I need a visa for Hong Kong and Japan from the UK?
No. British citizens on a full UK passport can usually visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 180 days and Japan for up to 90 days. Entry rules can change, so check GOV.UK before you book and again before you travel.
What currency do I need in Hong Kong and Japan?
Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar and Japan uses the yen. A rechargeable Octopus card is the easiest way to pay for transport in Hong Kong, and Suica or PASMO cards do the same in Japan. Carry some yen, as smaller restaurants and shrines may not take cards.
Can I add more time in Japan?
